There’s a new steering wheel coming to the 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupe and Cabriolet. The really big news is how this new innovative marvel of a steering wheel operates and that’s by using sensors. As in the Touch Control buttons on the steering wheel aren’t really buttons you actively push. They are actually capacitive sensors that track your finger and recognize where your finger is at any given moment, something Mercedes-Benz compares with using a smartphone. The functionality includes being able to swipe to see different menus and so on.
It also has a new capacitive sensor “mat” on the steering wheel rim, designed to detect if both hands are on the wheel. If they aren’t there for a certain period of time, the vehicle initiates a warning sequence and the Emergency Stop Assist activates if the driver’s hands remain undetected.
The new steering wheel is available in several variants depending on the trim. It will be available as a leather steering wheel and as a super sport flat-bottom version with the available AMG Line. The AMG control surfaces sport a high- gloss black finish, while the trim elements and surrounds have a silver shadow finish.
Oh and in case you were worried about heat, don’t be. Mercedes-Benz says the E-Class’s operating surfaces can withstand temperatures of over 212 degrees Fahrenheit.
